How to Avoid a NY DWI on Cinco de Mayo

Every year on May 5th, millions of people in the United States and Mexico celebrate Cinco de Mayo to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Not only do celebrations consist of parades and eating Mexican food, but they also involve drinking plenty of tequila and beer.
Since New York and many other states have started making indoor dining available at restaurants and reopening bars, it would not be a surprise if venues throughout the state are bustling with crowds after they were forced to stay home last year during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, just like any other holiday associated with heavy alcohol consumption, the police will increase the number of officers patrolling the streets and sobriety checkpoints to arrest suspected drunk drivers and keep the roads safe.
In order to avoid a DWI in New York on Cinco de Mayo, here are five tips you should follow:
- Appoint a designated driver – If you are going to celebrate with a friend who does not drink or doesn’t plan on drinking that day, ask him/her to be your designated driver (DD) for the night. You can also ask someone sober to pick you up, just in case, your friend ends up joining the festivities.
- Call a cab – During Cinco de Mayo and other holidays involving heavy drinking, some cab companies offer special services to deter drunk driving and make sure people get home safe.
- Request an Uber or Lyft – You may also use a rideshare app to request a ride home. However, be wary of surcharges, especially during closing hours.
- Spend the night – Whether you plan on sleeping over at a friend’s place that is closer to the venue or at a nearby hotel or motel, you can drink without worrying about finding a way to get home.
- Plan the party – To avoid driving or leaving your home at all, you can host a party at your place. Ensure that there is room in your house or apartment for guests to sleep over or check to see if they all have safe rides home.
